high idle and power loss combo
I dunno how to diagnose a problem im having with my 89 GTA. Any ideas or help would be most appreciated...heres the problem at hand.
Its a 5.7L 350 and it has around 180,000 miles but runs strong. Recently the car has been getting hot after being driven then sitting for a second and restarted or when being driven long periods of time (approx more than 45 mins solid). So it gets around the middles of the temp. gauge around 220, then when accelerating the car will suffer hesitation and power loss in btw 2 and 3 gear shifts and the SES light will light up for about 10 or 15 sec and then go off again. And if you try to give it a good amount of gas it wont go anywhere fast. As i slow to a stop my idle stays at 800 to 1000 instead of 550 like it should. Then when you repeat acceleration it does the missing and power loss again. Sorry if this was to detailed i just wanna get the best answers so i can fix this.
I appreciate any input or information anyone can provide to me about how to fix this

I am not really familar with the TPI setup but it sounds like maybe you MAF sensor. Have someone hook up a scanner or scan the code yourself if you know how. If your check engine light is coming on its a problem with one of the sensors and all you need is to pull the code to find out which one. Good Luck.
Not to contradict anyone, but the MAF sensor is a very closely monitored input. If the sensor outputs a signal that is outside the scceptable range for more than 600mS, the error code will set and lock, and not go away. The factory MAF tables are fairly tight, and won't allow much deviation from the expected range. I'd look elsewhere.
Incidentally, 220°F is within the normal operating range for these engines.
As IROCaholic suggested, retrieve the error codes. Your ECM is trying to tell you something. By your description of the symptoms, I'd suspect it may be a lean condition, but your ECM probably has some stored codes that could help point you in the right direction.
Get out your paper clip.
