Cam removal questions
Got a weird timing problem that points to bad cam gear (long story, there's another post about this) Anyways, I'm going to remove the came so I effectively decide whether it is the cause of the problem or not....and while I'm down there I can make sure there is nothing wrong with the chain, retainer, balancer, etc.
So, my first question is, do I HAVE to remove the intake manifold to get the lifters, or is there some tricky way of picking them up from the pushrod holes and suspending them?
Also, do I have to remove the oil pan? I was looking on another post about this and thats what somebody said needed to happen. I've had the timing cover off before, so I know that it screws up the oilpan gasket, but I managed to get it all back together and properly sealed without taking the pan off.
I tried to search, but my stupid 56k and the server just are not communicating, so I get server timeouts.
Thanks!

Yes, the intake has to come off. Can't get to the lifter valley any other way.
Don't need to REMOVE the pan, just loosen all the bolts enough so that the pan can drop about 1/2" to clear the funny timing cover lip. I've heard of people sawing them off and RTVing the heck out of it. Just not my style i guess.

Dude tell me you didn't write that up for me!
Anyways, thanks, this is awesome!
(Looks like I'll have to move up my plans to slap on that HSR that's been sitting around.....there's no way I'm going to all this trouble and putting the stock one back on!)
