How can you tell if Dist. is in backwards?
How can you tell if Dist. is in backwards?
Ok, I got my car back together and tried to fire it up last night and it would not start. The engine would turn over and at the end it would pop (backfire) Does this sound like the disturbutor is off 180*? I did have a custom chip made up and was wondering if it could be the problem. I'll beable to work on it again tomorrow was just loking on some input on what it could be. Thanks
Take out #1 plug. Rotate engine until timing marks at zero while sticking finger in SP hole, if pushing air is at TDC on compression stroke, open cap, rotor should be pointing at #1 wire, if not lift dist and rotate rotor to agree.
Jazz,
Look in the mirror..........
If your eyebrows have been singed off, the dist. is in 180* off.
Actually, like the man said, with the timing mark on TDC with #1 piston at the top, the rotor should point at #1 plug wire on the cap.
Good luck.

distrib is out 180 or timing is way out
prob 180 though, doesn't matter where the rotor is pointed at #1 cyl @ TDC as long as #1 plugwire is over the rotor at TDC
