Hi all-
Wondering if anyone has any suggestions. My 87 2.8L has been experiencing extremely rough stutters through acceleration. When I really use the gas pedal, it chokes and sputters like its running out of gas, and it will stall when coming to a hard stop. Took it to the shop, and they replaced the MAF. Got it back, and same symtoms. So, I checked the codes and it came back with 33,34, and 45. Im guessing the 33,34 are why they replaced the MAF. They also replaced the fuel filter. They did not replace the O2 sensor.(BTW, car passed emmisions test in PA right after MAF replaced) I called the shop, let them no that the car still had the same symtoms, so Ill be giving it back to them tuesday.

Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?? What else could it be? How should I deal w/ shop. I reset the codes, so ill need to try to get them back. A quick trip down the highway, hammering the gas didnt do the trick.

When was the last time you did a good tune up on it by checking and replacing the following items. Vacuum lines, PCV valve, sparkplugs & wires, cap & rotor, oil & filter change, and the timing?

 

well, let see. Plugs, replaced last month, wires were ok.
cap and rotor, think there still stock.
oil and filter change, replaced last month.
Timing, been about 6 years.
Vacuum lines, never
pcv vlave, never.

It is stalling even worse now than before it went into the shop.
Could it just be the MAF relays?

 

 

What is the fuel pressure?

While it's malfunctioning?

 

I cannot duplicate the malfunction unless the car is driving, and dont have a fuel pressure meter on the dash. It mostly happens only when the car is put under a heavy load(stuttering). Its really noticable going up hills too. The stalling has gotten worse since the MAF was replaced, much worse.

 

All of the symptoms you describe point to fuel starvation.

Rig up your FP gauge so you can see it while you're driving.

 

ok, the car is back at the shop. Let's see what they say is wrong. I asked the man at the counter how they could prove to me that I needed a MAF and he got a little upset, and didnt have an answer, but said they would it make it all right for me, whatever that means. When the shop performed a diagnostic the first time, the report they gave me had nothing listed under the error codes reporting section. Waiting with great anticipation.......

 

ok, got it back, seems to be ok, but the check engine light just came on. getting codes 33 and 34. Shop said they replaced maf again, and also gave me new plug wires. What the #@$@. Any thoughts?? Sounds to me like maybe a short to the MAF, what do you guys think?

Im thinking of resetting, and seeing if the light comes back on.

 

I've gone thru 3 MAf's in approx. 10K miles. My symptoms are occurring usually during starting. THe engine will fire right up then sputter a bit then die. It starts back up after doing this a coupla times or waiting a few minutes. During regular driving the Check engine will come on. I've scanned it myself and code 34 comes up, and i believe code 33 has came up last year when i replaced the MAF for the first time of the 3.
I'm thinink there is an electrical short somewhere thats causing this, anyone know where to start? The car runs fine once it gets going, rock solid idle, accelerates like it should, anyways. I thought I read once on these boards that someone related the problem to when he replaced the coolant fan temp sensor, I have changed my sensor the year before last.
One day I reset the codes, bought new MAF (well got it covered under warrenty), drove it to work and check engine light came on when i tried starting the car after work......NICE, same CODE different day, the trials and tribulations continue.

yup, same symptoms as dahlka01. Car starts so rough, im sick. Once its warm, its fine. Accelerates like it should now. (think the stuttering was actually cylanders not firing, ugghhh). Check engine light will come on depending on how rough it starts, and stay on untill its shut off. On next start, if it starts a little smoother, the light doesnt come on. Haven't reset the codes though, as I dont seee much point in that yet. BTW, car is ever going back to that shop.
