Quick helicoil for sparkplug question.
It looks like I might have to put a helicoil in a friends car and I would really rather do it with the head on, but thanks to gravity any metal shavings are going right on top of the piston. What would be the best way to make sure i get that crap out. Im thinkin if i have that cylinder up near TDC somewhere i can maybe use compressed air to just blow it out. Anyone have any experience with this? Im sure a magnet would do just fine but im afraid he might have an aluminum head.

i have been told that putting grease on the tap is suppost to catch some of the metal fragments.
honestly, ive never had much luck with the method.
i would try a good shop vac... i wouldnt blow it with compressed air as you might jam some particals between the piston and wall...

Thanx for the input guys. I have had a litte woops with a helicoil in the past as well, so im a litte aprehensive about the whole thing. Then i talked to the guy(who doesnt know jack about cars) lastnight and from what he was saying it sounds like someone else already may have done a heli-coil in it once all ready. If thats the case im not even gonna touch it.

I read an acticle about porting the TPI and these nuts didn't give a rats @$$ about allowing aluminum shavings getting into the combustion chamber. They just stuffed rags in the ports. They said the soft metal would melt and blow out the exhaust.
Personally, there is NO WAY I'd allow metal into the combustion chamber, but if you feel risky, I thought I'd throw this out.
The guy said everything turned out fine in the end, FWIW.
