engine died at a trffic light

a ouple days ago i was sitting at a traffic light and when it went green i hit the gas and nothin happen, so i turned down the music and my engine was off, so i turned the ignition off and tried starting it. it started up but it was stumbling and sputtering so i shut it off and then it wouldn't start after that. i assumed i was out of gas so a bypasser threw 5 bucks in and it still wouldn't start. eventually the bypasser told me to run it threw the gears and then try starting it and it started right up and has run fine since.i checked when i got home for a leak of some sort because the day before i had just put 30 bucks in and hadn't driven much and i couldn't find one. so i'm wondering if i was actually out of gas or if something else went wrong. if i was actually out of gas i assume that somebody sifined(not sure on the spelling) my gas out of the tank. my gas guage also said the tank was full but i think it's broken because it still says full. so if anybody has any ideas of what else could be wrong or how much it would be to fix etc. that would be greatly appreciated. thanks
