Problems w/ Adv. Timing (non 3G)

My friend has an 85 Olds w/ a 307 Carb engine. The sticker says 20* @ 1100RPM. He set it to 20* at 600+/-Rpm a few months ago .

The engine would be running too far advanced right??

If there is no noticible ping/knock, can this be a problem? He recently noticed that his engine has been burning a lot more oil than before. Could this be related?

I know it is not third-gen but it is tech

Thanks all
Dale

if its knocking then it is definatly too advanced... how is his fuel efficiency? is the engine overheating or getting hotter than normal? Help him out and get in the car or get a gauge to actually do it right... He'll appreciate it...

Well, Does it mean 20* initial timing, @ 1100 RPm ?

cause weather its at 1100, 600, or 9000, 20* initial timing is 20* initial timing.

Mech Timing is what Varies dependant on RPM, and thats going to Locked in by the factory.( who would recurve an olds 307 ? )

General Rule of the oakey-rigg tuner, If its not pinging, Its not too far advanced

No, its not gonna have anything to do with him burning more oil, Unless....

Maybe, If he had bad rings to start with, the more advanced timing would put more initial pressure on his rings, forcing more blowby wich could then be interpreted as burning oil.

But I doubt it.

EDIT:

Wait, I should append that, because altho What I said was technically correct, It could be misleading.

First, if he timed it with vaccum advance connected, it will throw off the reading, because the 20* he timed it at would include any vac advance in at that RPM, So unplug the can and plug the line.

But I take that back, 85 carbed, it prolly has a computer controlled advance, haha.

Secondly, along the same lines, If mech advance is in at any amount by 1100 rpm, And it calls for 20* totall advance at 1100, and he timed it to 20* total at 600, Then depending on how the damn mech advance is curved, he could be running too much advance.
but again, Prolly computer controlled.

So make sure to Disconnect the distributor control before timing, I would think anyway, if the olds 307 was in anyway similar to our LG4/Lb9/L98/Lo3 family here.

Simple answer? advance it till it pings, then back it off till it just stops. Truth is, Most of our motors are detuned from the factory, and can Live with a little More advance. The olds 307, however, Is I belive detuned By design

Even simpler answer, Its a 307, Throw it In a river.

I brought my timing light up to school and will check it this week sometime.
He is getting 20-25MPG Hwy
I dunno if it is running warm. All he has are idiot lights

After further questions, he said he set it by ear at 600rpm.

The dist is vac adv.

Thanks
Dale
