Steering column,, I can't get it back in!!!
I have a steering column out of a '83 Camaro that i'm trying to put in my '86 camaro ..
I got the '83 steering coliumn for really cheap so i want to make this work.
Anyway,
The metal thing at the end that goes through the fire wall and slides into the other part ..
( this is really hard to describe, I;'m sorry)
It shaped like:
____
(____)
it had two flat sides, so it's not perfectly round.
But it wont slide into where it's supposed to go..
Are they different sizes? Or am i just not pushing hard enough?
Has anyone else done it??
Help, I cant drive with no steering!

As far as I know all thirdgen's have the same base column just with different options such as tilt, steering wheel controls, air bag...etc. All the columns should have the same shaft on the end of them. try lubing up the shaft that slides into it with some lithium grease.

That tube is a pain to get back in. You will have to beat it with something to persuade it to go in. I had the same problem when putting my headers in, and had to separate the steering column. Putting it back together was the biggest hold up in the project. Have a little patience and you should get it in.
it just takes some muscle.
I struggled with mine for about half an hour, Wonder If I had done something wrong, and then all the sudden it slid in easy as Pie.
Get a glove on, Reach down and just Yank the steering Box side of it out, then have a buddy slide the other side In from the car.
but yes, It should lineup Fine. keep at it.

Shouldn't be that hard to do. I swapped one out myself--89 to 86-slid right in. You will have to jiggle it around a little. Are you sure you didn't bend anything by mistake?
I still have the part that goes into the engine compartment if you need it.
