How do i know which timing chain/gear set will fit my 1986 IROC?

Hey all. I ordered a timing chain and gear set from summits webpage yesterday.

It is a "Comp Cams" set, the dual chain or "true roller" version.

On summits webpage, they said it would fit all small block chevys from the years 1955-1991. 305's included. I figured i had selected the correct chain with the information the provided on their site.

When i checked my summit magazine at home however, this same chain set had a foot note that they didn't have on the webpage. it said "will not work with factory roller cam"

Well, i do have a 1986 IROC 305 TPI "LB9", but i am not sure if this set will work or not without a cam change. Does anyone here know?

I am having the chain itself installed for 300 bucks, and don't have several grand lying around to pay for the installation of a new cam, so picking up a new cam and changing the old one out is out of the question for me right now.

Just want to double check with everyone here to make sure i ordered the correct chain set for my car.

Thanks for the read! please reply

Cool. I assumed that a "roller cam" was a "non hydraulic cam". (im pretty sure i have a non hydraulic cam stock, but im not positive)

Im still not too familiar with what's what in a engine. Im working on it though.

Why don't they work with the roller cam? Pardon my ignorance here if it is something simple and obvious!

Working on:
'84 Z28 LG4 305 with 200,000 original miles!
Added dual elec fans.
145 MPH IROC Speedo
Building 430 HP 350 (ZZ430)
using primarily GMPP parts.
Short block sitting on a stand. (Man, those Fast-Burn heads sitting on it look good!)

Starting to look like the Kicker poster child!

The cam gear is different on the roller cam engines due to the retainer plate.

CCA-3100... thats what you need. You're all set.
