Questions about a Firebird
Guys, I am new here and relatively clueless to older General Motors products. This entire site has a plethora of information about Third Generation F-Bodies but I still need your help on sorting somethings out. I suppose what I am looking for is some chronological list outlining engine and transmission choices and changes for each year.
I've come in contact with a 1984 Firebird which I am positive is a six cylinder mated to a four speed automatic. Im typically a Mopar kid so I don't know any specifics about this combination. Consensus is that the engine is blown, though I've heard this four speed transmission is bullet-proof. Can anyone post links or provide me with information as to if this engine is throttle-body injected, carburated, etc., and does it share any relation to late eighties modeled Cavaliers? I've heard GMC transmissions are quite interchangable among different engine choices provided for the model year, does this hold true for a conversion to a 5.0 litre engine? I won't bother you guys with how to "convert" questions just yet. And you could assume if I wanted that specific eight cylinder, it wouldn't be for performance but extra pep.
All help is greatly appreciated. I've always had a distant liking for these Firebirds and wouldn't mind trying out this Pontiac at all... if I can get it a new heart.

Welcome to the "light".
Maybe these resources will help:
Third Gen's Tech Data Page
Czech Pontiac Page... Interesting
Read about Pontiac until you are blue (Power Links)
I'm not sure of the details of being able to mate a certain engine with a certain tranny but the first suggestion I would make is to post this in one of the technical forums like Engine Swap or Tech / General Engine.
There are a ton of really smart fellas on this forum.
Have fun.

Another Nopower... I mean Mopar guy gonna get first hand at going faster for less!!! Nice thing about all the GM stuff, especially the earlier blocks/trannies is about everything is interchangable and you can get parts at the 7-11 store for less than half of what the Slopower parts cost
