Semi-Tech Question. Do you know jack >?

Not sure How Tech this really is, But It Applies To our cars, and Working On them

A While back, My floorjack got "Jacked" Out of the Back of My friends truck. ( Parking lot at Pick n' Pull, Oops )

So I need to get a new one. I was wondering, If anyone can Suggest a good Quality, Solid jack, that Will Fit under My car The One I had previously Was a nice jack, but I had to drive Up on Small Piles of Lumber To get my crossmemeber sufficently high above the ground For it To Fit.

My Buddy has one that I can jam under the Xmemeber If I do it Right, But its flimsy and Visibly flexes, Not something Im going to Crawl under the car with.

Thanks.

I use a Guardian which is a subsidiary of Hein-Warner. Great jack, has very smooth raise and lower. Unfortunately after 20+ years it finally blew the main seal. Thank god I wasn't under the car when it happened. All in all it was a quality jack but the years caught up to it.

The only part of your body that should be under a car that's on a jack is the arm that's putting the jack stand under the car.

I have a 2-1/4 ton from Harbor Freight that fits under the crossmember and has plenty of grunt to get the car up in the air. I've had it since 1996 with no problems to date. It gets used a bunch (just used it last night to jack up both ends of the '57). I believe they're less than $50 now.

I have a 3 ton craftsman that fits underneath the cross member with room to spare. This is on a non-lowered car though. It's a very sturdy jack and only costs $100 and you get two jacks stands with it.

Yeah I know 57, But inevitably you end up under there, weather for 30 seconds or 2 hours, It could still end your life.

Hey, I just realized the correlation Between Five7 and your 57, Cute.

I like the idea of that harbor frieght, Altho I have heard Some Bad things about the Quality Of their Tools.

Ill Checkout the craftsman, Their Quality Is not in question. My Car is lowerd However, SO I dunno...

Something Bothers Me about the Autozone special, thats what the Flexomatic I have here now is, as a Highlight One of the welds broke On it today< itsa Goner...

Yep, a 10 cent o-ring blowing out could end your life. I don't get under my car unless it's on jackstands and I give it a couple good shakes just to make sure. If I'm leaving the tires on I put RR ties under just in case...

It just seems like a bad way to go, and if you don't get killed, a very painful recovery... My worst fear is getting crushed to the point I can't move or scream or breath.... Suffocating to death because I work alone. That would really ruin my day

Dale,

You are disappointing me. What the hell are you doing under a car without jack stands? You can get a safe pair of stands for less than the cost of an oil change. Why would anyone even chance it?

The next time I'm in Sawyer county, I'm going to be looking for a ThirdGen sharing the garage with a pair of stands. We won't be disappointed again, will we?

Joel has the right idea - jack it, stand it, and shake it. We won't be reading about him in the "DUH" section of the obituaries any time soon.

As for a jack with decnet capacity and lift range with a saddle that will fit under the crossmember, I have to use fabricated ramps or a small scissors jack on everything I own except a van to get the jack under them, and the lowest jack I have has a 4" collapsed saddle height. These 50-series tires and short, stiff springs, plus the ground effects make it almost impossible to jack without some alternate lift of some sort. My TA will not fit on a single post "spider" type rack, and the other cars will just barely clear some of them.

I have a Craftsman jack, so does my dad. Mine is about 10 years old, his is around 20 or so. His leaks down ever so slightly, but mine is just fine. His was made in the US, and mine... I dont remember but Im pretty sure its China or the like, but Ive never had a problem with it. Both are heavy. I think I paid 100 bucks, a good deal IMO.

Dont get me started on jackstands and lifts... Ive seen too many cars fall, and just by pure luck nobody got hurt. ALWAYS use stands, and ALWAYS check to make sure its secure by pushing down on the bumper a couple times. When you are banging away under there with your BFH on a 24" breaker bar, things can and do move where you dont want them to.

I went to an auction for a garage that was going out of business. I picked up one of the huge roll around jacks for $25. Fits under my 92 Z28 convt easily. Dude, ever lay under your car and look at all that steel above your head and think if that fell on you? I always use two jacks stands and leave the floor jack in place. Scares the **** out of me every time. I was a safety officer in the Navy. One report I read had a Marine with his truck up very high on jackstands, a big 4X4. Well he got so agressive under the truck with the breaker bar, he pulled the truck off the jacks, it fell on him and crushed him. Be careful people!
