Timing Pointer Needed
Timing Pointer Needed
Hi Guys, I have an 89 305TPI GTA. When I did the timing chain years ago I installed a new mr. gasket cover which didn't have the timing marker. I'm gonna procharge the car so I need to make sure timing is bang on. Can someone tell me which timing pointer i need to buy?
I'm looking at the ones in summit but I don't know which to get size wise or type. I don't think my cover has provisions (bolts) to just bolt one on. Can the outter cover bolts be used to install one?
Thanks for any help guys..

No such thing.
There is no "bolt-on" timing pointer that will be accurate with your harmonic balancer, if you still have the stock one. The mark should be almost in the center of the timing cover.
Either get a stock timing cover; or buy the pointer of your choice and find TDC with a dial indicator on the #1 or #6 piston, and mark your balancer yourself; or buy a balancer and pointer as a set.

So the mark on the balancer (it is the stock unit)will indicate my present timing degrees once the engine is at TDC?
Does the balancer only go on at one particular spot? I wondering if we lined it up at all when we reinstalled it...

Yes the mark on the balancer will indicate your timing; but only by way of its position in relation to the stationary part, which is (was) welded onto your stock timing cover.
The balancer has a keyway. It only goes on the crank in one possible place.

if you buy one of the aftermarket timing pointers that bolt onto your existing cover they will be accurate without a problem used them for years and years on many many different engines and set ups .....all you need to know when you order one is the size of the balancer you have

No bolt-ons that bolt on to the center of the timing cover, at 12:00.... You can get pointers all day long for the older balancers with their mark at either of the 2 older locations; but not for 12:00 balancers.
