Fuel Pump problem/questions...

my car has a problem...when you floorboard it, about the top of 2nd gear usually, it runs out of gas. sometimes, just half throttle, and if i let off the gas for a few seconds it resumes normal operation...well, i have pretty much determined that my car needs a fuel pump...now for a few more questions...it seems to be GUZZLING gas...when normally this car actually does pretty well on gas...i would think if the fuel pump was dying, it would use LESS fuel...but i would also suppose if it is starving it for fuel, then the feedback carb would demand more...i dont know, i might be way off on that, if i am, please pay it no mind and feel free to (tactfully please ) correct me. also, does anyone know the VIN that they started using the 2 fuel pump system? i am pretty sure i DONT have it (no fuel pump fuse location designated on the fuse panel) but i would like to make sure. i know all the auto parts stores say "look at the pump casting", but i would like to BUY the pump BEFORE i remove mine, lol. so does anyone know the VIN that the 2 fuel pumps became commonplace on the LG4? alright, i think that is about all i can come up with for now. thank you guys in advance for any help you can provide!

Look at the right front corner of the engine, just above the oil pan rail. Do you see a mechanical fuel pump there?

yea, there is a good 'ol mechanical pump there, but i know that in late '86/'87 they incorporated the two pump (one electric, one mechanical) to fight vapor lock. at least, this is what i am told...

The factory didn't start installing the electric in-tank pusher until the 1987 model year (which started in late 1986).

They did have a dealer-installed kit to resolve customer vapor lock complaints. If the fuel pump fuse is empty, including no terminals, then you don't have an electric pump - most likely. Jack up the rear end and check the harness going to the tank. If it has an electric pump, you'll have more wires than just the fuel gage wire.

Either way, the mechanical pump will be the same. As I've said before, my AC replacement from Checker has been working fine for the past 5 years.

Are you sure that its a fuel pump problem? Just wondering given that you say its chewing gas faster than normal, whether it something else. Have you checked the plugs to see if its running rich etc?

Just want to check that you are certain its the pump.... other problems can cause the engine to falter on full throttle, like say a weak coil, or off timing perhaps? just a thought....

Well, insted of just throwing parts at the problem why don't you do some testing first?? Most vacuum gauges have a secondary use and that is to check fuel pump pressure. Also you can get a qt. jar and it should be full in 30 sec.

Auggie

PS: Check that fuel inlet filter at the carb.

well, i know that you probably didnt mean anything by it, but give me a little more credit than that. i DID do some testing, in fact, all today i did more. it all comes back to the fuel pump...i was just asking what else might cause this JUST to make sure...

No offense intended. There are a lot of members that tend to jump to conclusions and condemn good parts, and you hadn't mentioned that you had already checked the likely suspects, so he was just making certain.

yea, i know. sorry i jumped too quickly, i was having a crappy day. turns out, car is still running like crap after the fuel pump. i looked at the carb while forcing it to simulate the problem (doesn't take much forcing now...lol) and turns out i need a carb altogether so it looks like the CCCarb is goin bye bye. i know it CAN be a reliable system, but i just really don't wanna mass with it. not scared of it by any means, i have messed with TPI for a while now, but just want the simplicity of a BASIC carburetor. turns out, when mine is IDLING, the secondaries are FULL of fuel. so as you might imagine, it is flooding out like crazy when you give it ANY gas. my friend and i have disassembled the carb COMPLETELY replacing gaskets, cleaning up, resetting float, installing new needle and seat, new plunger, etc. and it still does no different. the computer has a few different issues anyhow, so i am just gonna convert it and be done with it. thank you for all of your help, i very much so appreciate it!!
