If it goes "click click" when you push the button, then it's working; as far as the switch goes, anyway. If the switch wasn't working, it wouldn't go "click click".
These pumps are an incredibly stupid design, that doesn't last for more than 5 years. The plastic they make some of the parts out of, dissolves in wiper solvent. In fact, in my 83, it died in 86. I blew off the factory stupidity and put in one like they went to in later years, that's a little vane pump or something, that squirts continuously as long as you hold the button down; and I liked that so much, I went and got the later model wiper arms, that have the squirters in the arms and sort of drop the fluid in an arc all across the windshield, instead of firing a jet of it at the windshield from a distance. Seems like the pump was just a universal replacement one from Auto Zone or Advance or some such, and the arms were like $12 the pair for used ones. Altogether better than even a perfectly working instance of the 83 stuff, and likely to last many more years besides.

I'm betting that the pump died, pre-88 thirdgens got the "in the wiper motor" pump while the 88-up thirdgens got the "in-tank" pump. Just go get a new washer pump, I heard its $16. If you really wanna eliminate the worries, go to the junkyard and pick up a tank and pump from an 88-up car and wire it to your car.

I wasn't implying you were. Anyhow, they should spray without your wipers even being switched to the on position. Reason i asked about the hose is coz on mine, there was a small green and whitre plastic valve that the hose wasn't connected to and they wouldn't spray, but after i hooked the hose up they worked fine.
