Would this make a good drag car?

Okay in my town there is a guy selling an 84 camaro SC for $300. Its in horrible shape, needs paint, interiror looks like it exploded, its a 2.8 V6, needs wheels, has spares on front. Its the ultimate camaro beater. My idea was to buy it, rebuild the engine cus its leaking oil, go get 2 turbos from the junkyard, and have me a junkyard turbo camaro. If I blow it up, hell im out a whole 300 bux. Should I buy it?

If you think you can do it, go for it... a ton of 2.8'ers have talked the "twin-turbo-2.8" route, but never walked it. Whoever proves that they did it will win "instant fame", but so far, all of the claims go unanswered!

As far as rebuilding the '84 2.8, you might want to look into a junkyard block. mid-85's got large-journal cranks. All '85-up f-body 2.8's received not only the multiport injection, but a more agressive camshaft, and better-flowing heads. In fact all of those changes "at once" made GM call the '85 MPFI 2.8 a "HO" engine (which was dropped in '86). The '87-up 2.8's are internally balanced, as opposed to previous years, which were balanced on the flywheel/flexplate (i.e. the flywheel/flexplate needs to stay with the engine it came with, or have it rebalanced).

If it's just a drag car, go for it.. but if you want to restore it, it sounds like a LOT of work. How's the body, besides paint?

If the body is rusted out then walk away. You need a good foundation to build a good drag car. You'll spend more to fix the body than it will cost to find one in better shape. Find one with a good body but may have a blown engine, tranny, diff etc. You'll pay a bit more but it's a better deal.

When I bought my 87 it was "very good condition" and the body was mint. I gutted it to make a race car and didn't care what the rest of it looked like.
