AC recharge q's

What costs and procedures would be done on a ac compresor swap? I know nothing about ac but I figure most of the cost other than the compresor itself will be to recharge the system. Can I do this at home, if so how much would it cost and what would I need?
thanks

Depends on if you have R12, or R134a. Check the label on the radiator support, and it will tell you. R12 is no longer available over the couter (unless, you have a license...) You will also need to be able to evacuate the system, (gotta vacuum pump), and recharge (got the manifold guages?) Look for an inexpensive garage to recharge for you. You can change the compressor, but, after that, ya need some special tools.

let the old Freon out by hand. Just wear gloves and buy the 134A recharge/convert kit usually about 30 bucks. Follow direction and wham its done. Not that hard at all.

Even if you were to let the freon out (illegally) into the atmosphere, wouldn't you still need to evacuate the system?

Or is evacuation only needed if (A) the system's been leaking or (B) the fittings were opened?

I put Freeze12 in my RS. It's not R12 or R134. It blends perfectly with R12 and is just as cold. R134 sucks. I have R134 in my IROC and wish like hell I knew about Freeze12 a year ago. I bought it at a local autoparts store.
