Do I have a Rear Main Seal Leak?

I noticed some oil dripping down on my y-pipe today, does this mean I have a rear main seal leak. I just got this gm goodwrench 350 about two months ago, thankfully there is a warranty on it. By the way can a dealer ship put ceramic coating on headers.

Before you assume it's the rear main, check your valve cover gaskets 1st.

My full size blazer (350) and my camaro (305) have both had this problem and it was the valve gaskets. they tend to leak in the back when they get loose, and drip down making you think it's the rear main.

Just something to check out.....

Thomas.

Wow, thanks, I checked behind the valve covers and I got some oil on my fingers, I retightned the wind nuts and I ran the car and turned it off and didn't notice any oil dripping down. My car as of a couple days ago started running rough at idle and when I gave it gas, now that I tightned the valve covers it cleared up, was I loosing compression or is there another reason for this?

Compression is made in the combustion chambers not the block. The only reason i can think of for a rough running engine that was cured by a valve cover adjustment is the pcv valve had incorect pressure and was bouncing around. Must have been some oil leak for this to happen.

Hey, your welcome! Been there -- done that

You could have been loosing power from oil seeping down into the rear spark plugs. You might want to change them out if it looks like it was.

Also, like SS Chevy said, the PVC system could have been getting incorrect readings due to your crank case pressure being off. But it shouldn't have been too far off.

Actually, now that I think about it, the oil collecting on the Y-Pipe will heat that pipe up A LOT! your O2 sensor may have been freaking out from the added temperature?
