What does detonation sound like?

I have been asking some questions about timing, cause I would like to get mine set to the best I can, some have said to bring it to the point it detonates and back it off two degrees, but I don't know what this sounds like. I have an 87 L98 TPI and I know stock it was 6* I currently have it set at 10 and don't appear to have any problems, I would like to advance it as much as possible before detonation though, help. Thanks.

Stick a couple small rocks in a coffee can, wrap it in a blanket, and shake it. Thats what it sounds like. It can be quiet and hard to discern, When test driving roll the windows up, and turn off everything you can.

Also remember that the "3 rocks in a coffe can" is major detonation, you might not be able to hear minor. so it's a good idea to retard the timing a degree or 2 after you stop hearing anything.

If you have a knock sensor you may never hear the detonation as the computer will retard timing before you can hear it.

Bear tracks hit it...unless you bypass teh knock sensor your computer will most likely back off the timing before you hear anything.

How to bypass the KS...real easy, go to radio shack and buy yourself 3.9k ohm resistors and hook it between the senor connector and ground. Then you can check for detonation w/ different timing.
