When you look at the distributor under the hood , does the 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 firing order go clockwise or counter clockwise?

I believe it is counter clockwise.

The rotor turns clockwise.
#1 terminal on the dist cap is the one on the driver's side of straight ahead.

True story...my buddy swapped his redone L69 into his 86 regal w/ blown up boat anchor 307 olds in it. For no apparent reason he retained the retainer thing for the coil in cap HEI from the 307, and you know how those are numbered. So instead of thinking, he just puts 'em on according to that. And he spent hours pulling his hair out trying to figure it out. So after i helped him through some other side issues, and even re-stabbed his distributor for him (he's too dumb to get it on the OP) to make sure the timing was close, it occurred to me that his plug wires didn't seem right. So i quick checked my car, and his monte. Sure enough, the olds retainer had the #s going CC. Old's distributors are on the PS of the cam, and thus, spin the other way (or VV)
One of many reason i wouldn't let that guy change my oil....oh, and he would like to beleieve he is a mechanic by trade.
