Trying to figure out what to do with $1000.

Besides giving it to someone on the forum. I have a stock LG4. I was thinking I'll get a beefier cam and the S/R Torquer 305 heads. I also need to be able to afford to have the parts installed because I do not have the time or knowledge. I'm thinking for the cam of going with a Comp XE262. My main concern right now would be emissions. Any different suggestions? This car will remain a street car but I'd like something with a little more SOTP oomph.

Thanks for the help,
Matt

No I think you were right I need the 1000$
A cam/timing chain "210-220@.50" &"double roller" change would wipe out about half of your budget profesianlly instaled. But that would give you more bang for the buck. Also change the air filter to open element. Then since emmitions are an issue go for a high flow cat and new performance muffler.
That should wipe out most of your budget but leave you with a few hundred to put in the HO 350 fund

I already have a savings account at a separate bank set up for a ZZ4. I put about $100 in a month and whatever's left at the end of the month. The $1000 is coming back from the government and I figured I'd do a little bit of work to the 305 that's in it now just to tide me over. The exhaust sounds like a better plan than the heads. Think I'll go that route.

Thanks for the help,
Matt

A quick question. I'm not very knowledgeable of cams and was wondering what the 210-220 meant. Is that the grind? What would be a cam that'd work well for what I'd want. Would the Comp XE262 be within limits of the emissions?

If I were in your shoes, I think I would go ahead and throw the 1000 in the account for the ZZ4, I mean, why put 1000 into an engine you're going to replace? If I did put it elsewhere, I'd put it into everything besides the engine. Exhaust, Shift Kit, Police Upshift Valve, Corvette Servo, CAI, and then some new tires. You could use that even with your ZZ4, so it wouldn't be like throwing it away.

ovrclck350 is totally correct. if you were gonna waste the money on that POS 305, when you are getting a ZZ4. DONT

put that $1000.00 into the suspension and rearend, that will make is strong enough to handle that ZZ4, and BUY SOME SFC's

just an idea!!

Your going to need a good set of headers, a 3" cat, and a 3" catback for the ZZ4 anyway, would be just fine to get them now for the 305...

Hmm just noticed you were a Co guy to
Yea go with the exhuast mods if you have a zz4 fund. The exhaust will be greatly appreciated by bolth engines especially the zz4. Do you have emission testing in your area? Do you have a carb or injection? If you have a carb get a shinny new holley 600cfm.
A 750 will not run worth Dog S*** in the high altitude.
Tell me exactly what you have on your car and I can give you the info to make it haul A** in high altitude.

BTW 5,7kid lives in your neck of the woods he might also be able to give you some insites on tricking out your engine in HighAl. That is if you can get his attention.

It has a computer controlled QuadraJet and there's emissions testing in my town. According to everyone around here that I've talked to if I replace the carb it won't pass. I was thinking of wiring the choke light to the Check Engine light to make it blink. I have a Holley 600 cfm DP in the garage collecting dust that was going to be used on a different car. I'd slap it on if I could figure out a way to get it around the emission test. (Maybe if I stuck a wire to the carb and printed out some QuadraJet emblems to cover the Holley emblems.)

Don't put that DP carb. on that car unless you replace your CC distributor, you could really mess the engine up if you do.

I spaced that...(smacking myself in the head.) But is there a way to get the Holley to pass? Can it be leaned out enough to pass? Or would I need to step down to a vacuum secondary Holley? I forgot to say I'd replace the distributor too.

Double pumper dont run worth squat up here either.

As far as getting another carb on there and passing emmitions a holley "80457S", should pass unless the smog jocky got too carried away with a visual inspection. But then you need an adapter and another air cleaner "hood clearance issue". How detailed are the inspections? I never had to get a smog check myself when i lived in denver, all my vehicals were liscend in pueblo . The check engine light could be wired to the choke light for the "Its there effect".

They look at your check engine light? Darn (for lack of a stronger and edited term), and I thought the emmissions Natzis in NC were strict! Do a few searches on the Carb board relating to E-check issues.

BTW- I pass with flying colors with my Holley which, for one day a year, is hidden by the stock air cleaner so I have the TAC sensor. The sniffer doesn't mind my 262 cam w/ 1.6 rollers either. Since I replaced all my guages, I rigged up the blinkers and high beam indicator, but no SES light. It would stay ON all the time anyways now that I've ditched the ECM. Look for some of Ed Maher's articles about the Q-jet... it's a good carb in general. Also, 5.7kid seems to know a lot about them too.

As for what to do with the $1K... spend it on exhaust/tranny/suspension mods first, save it for a 350 second, or third option, put it in a fund for "repair all the things that go wrong when you swap engines"! Just my $0.02...
