Headlight motor assembly question

My drivers side headlight isnt going up, but its turning on. I ruled out the switch, because the passenger side light still works. I figured it was the relay, but I have an assembly question about the motor.

A few weeks ago I rebulit the headlight motor. Then the gear starting jamming, so I ripped it back apart. At the top of the motor shaft there are two springs held in by two little metal pieces, each attached to a wire. One of them had come off and got stuck in the gear. I removed it, replaced the springs and jammed the wire that had the piece broken off into the spring against the motor, and it worked fine.

Now my headlight wont come up. When this first started it wouldnt go up, but if you started to move it along manually it would go the rest of the way. Now that doesnt even work. Could that little piece off the wire be giving me this much trouble? Or is a bad relay to blame? I havent had the time to switch the relays yet to test it.
