file fitting rings - do YOU compress the ring to do both sides of the gap?

file fitting rings - do YOU compress the ring to do both sides of the gap?

I had always thought that you should try to keep it square by compressing the ring so both sides of the gap would be touching on the grinding wheel. But I recently saw someone only doing one side. I admit, my fingers would have liked it better but I don't see how you can keep the filed end square like that. I had a devil of a time even keeping it square anyway. I guess you would only have to file one side and since the other side was untouched, it would remain square.

If you could be certain that the side you ground/filed was a perfect radial after you finished, you could get away with filing only one side. That, of course, is presuming that the original ends were perfect radials to begin with.

I would prefer to dress both sides, assuring a good fit regardless of the final angle left at the ends. But I think you already knew the answer to that one...

i only file one side, my ring filer does a pretty good job of keeping the end the same as long as i take my time and set it up before i start. if you've never filed a ring before it doesn't take much to increase the gap.
