A Tale of Two Balancers
A Tale of Two Balancers
Allright, In the world of Internally Balanced SBC's, we have Two Balancers. The One with the Strait Up Timing mark, and the Other one.
The Lg4 has the "other" one, and I just bought a strait Up, to replace it.
My Question For you, Is How many deg off Is one mark from the other, IE where should I make my "correct" Mark. I would Simply trace the line over from the old balancer, But with 150k On it, Its accuracy is suspect, and hence the reason for this whole undertaking.
Thanks...

I had a problem like yours I put a balancer from a 79 305 on my 85 305 tpi ta. And couldn't figure out why the timing marks were so off. So ended up pulling it off and matching the timing mark with the other And I think I got it pretty close. Another way is to find top dead center of compression stroke for #1 cylnder and the balancer should be at 0tdc.

2 1/16 inches should be REAL close.

Just for anyone that may later archive and find this post:
For your 6 and 3/4 balancer, the degrees are as follows
(6.72/2)^2 * pi = 35.7665" circumference
35.7665"/360 = 2.125/x
x = 20.389 (crank degrees, so since 2.125 isn't exact, go with 21 or 20, 20 is nicer)
So it should be off by about 10 cam degrees.
