Occasional Miss and cutting out ....

I have an 89 5.7L TBI that seams to continually want to spit, sputter, miss and cut out. It will run fine for a while (5 miles or so) then will bog.. and start spitting and sputtering. I have changed the fuel filter, plugs, wires, cap, and rotor.
What has me confused is that it seams to run great in between it's coughing fits. I figured it could also be a vacuum leak or a faulty fuel pump but wouldn't those make it do it all the time ??
All advice is appreciated .. Thank's

Check for a bad ground to the block. Also get a scanner and run a data capture when the problem arises.

I am not getting any error codes out of it normally. I got an error code 44 once but after I cleared it, it has not come back but the problem persists ... the code 44 is a lean indicatio and the o2 sensor ..
Is it possible this could be something serious like a head or head gasket ???
