While driving if I push in the cruise button, it goes in but wont engage. Why? Help will be appreciated.

first thing i always check is the cruise button that gets pressed by the brake and clutch pedals.
if they arnt pressed in when the pedal is up, it always thinks the pedal is down and it wont turn on.

My 88 Firebird's CC worked when I got the car and then misteriously stopped a couple years later... I figured it just died, til a little while later the car started running like crap... found out it had a vacuum leak. Replaced the hose, and the cruise worked perfect again.
My 89 GTA the cruise works too... once in a while it acts up and won't work... my guess is dirty contacts in the switch maybe... but majority of the time it works.

Yeah, I learned a dirty trick you can play on your friends w/ firebirds. In the engine compartment on the back wall above the the steering column there's a box with a vacuum line running to it. Disconnect that hose and the car will still run but extremely rough. I found that my 82 T/A was running really rough, the engine was sucking in air from somewhere. We finally found that that vacuum hose had disconnected from the plug and was sucking in air. Although! I strongly discourage using this trick on the innocent... or anyone who carries a firearm in their trunk. Messing with a person'spontiac is scrilege and blasphemy.

go over and loosen their gas cap.
