Engine wont start

I have an 88 IROC with 305 tpi and while I was driving it tonight it died several times on the way home. I finally got the car home after several starting attempts and pulled the ecm codes, it flashed the usuall "12" and then "34" a code for the MAF. Now the car wont start at all, it turns over and then dies instantly, I can keep the engine running by steping on the gas but the second I let off it dies.

sounds like the maf is bad check that none of the wires are broke in the sensor if you have a multi meter check if you are geting power to the wires(make shure that none are broke, and then check the maf the current should be 0.5 volts at idle and 4.7 at wot. If you arent regestering any voltage than your maf is bad.

hope this helps

It could be the power relay and the``burnoff`` relay, you can change
them or have them as spare parts if they
are OK.
Good luck

Well I checked the wires inside the maf and they look fine, I cant check the voltage of the maf because the car wont start. I replaced both the relays and still nothing.

Sounds like a bad oil pressure switch to me.

Hook a gauge up to the fuel rails. See if the pressure drops to zero when you start it and then let the key back out of "Start".

The fuel pump gets its power from the fuel pump relay when in start, and from an oil pressure switch when it's running. That way the pump doesn't keep pumping even when the engine stops running, a safety feature. If that switch goes bad it will produce the symptom you describe.

Will your car start if it is cold?
I had the exact same problem.... If it is only showing code 34 then It could be a Vacuum Leak within the Induction System. Check to see if the Mass Air Flow is seated properly,( Line up the notches ) Also take a good look at the inside of the Mass Air Flow Sensor and see if the tiny sensor wire is still intact if not you may need to buy a New MAF ($ OUCH!!$). Also replace Both Burn Off & Power Relays near the Brake Booster on the Firewall. Check to see if they are making a good electrical connection to the relay and none of the wires on the bottom are touching..... they could be shorting eachother out. Next check if the MAF Sensor CONNECTOR is making good Electrical contact. The Computer in the car reads information such as Air/ Fuel mixture the MAF helps the computer measure the ammount of air to fuel ratio. If the MAF is not sending the right readings to the computer your car will either not start or have trouble starting..... Try this and see if it works first.

Well it looks like it was the oil pressure/fuel pump cutoff switch. And I was about to blow $250 on an MAF. Thanks for all the help guys, I really appreciate it.

Well it looks like I was a little premature about celebrating. The oil pressure switch was bad, it had oil blow thru it. But the engine still wont start. Like I said before if I hold the gas down while starting it and then hold the throttle at 1100 rpm it runs fine but the second I let off it dies. And while it is running I can hear the fuel pump in the back working fine.
