engine knocks is it blown?

Hello,

I replaced a blown stock 305 for my berlinetta with another 305 and when we started it yesterday began to hear a knocking noise from engine friend said it could just be a bad oil pump or something but starting to think its a blown engine. Bought it from someone around here who sells used engines he said it ran when it was pulled. Any ideas what could be causing the knocking?

It could be a pile of things. I seriously doubt it is your oil pump. If you oil pump was broken you would be hearing your valves pinging metal on metal. Could be an exhasut leak ( exhaust is more of a tick). Could be your valve train geometry. Remove a valve cover at a time, and run the engine. It maybe louder indicating a valve/pushrod/rocker arm problem.

if it's a tick tick it's up top if it's thud thud or bang bang it's on bottom.. if it's clang clang its up top or knock knock it's probably up top..
