thinking of buying a 305 TBI what show I check first

here is a description of the car:

8 cyl. Auto- Power Locks, Windows. 305 TBI, OPEN ELEMENT, NEW: 3" HEDMAN HEADERS,3" CATCO CAT.,8MM TAYLER PRO IGNITION WIRES, A/C DELETE BOX, POLYURATHANE TRANSMISSION MOUNT AND SWAYBAR BUSHINGS, BS POTENZA RE730 TIRES, POR15 COATED CHASSIS, RUNS WELL.

Needs: A/C, Paint job, needs new interior, dash cracked, steering colum cracked due to someone trying to steal car, but everything works as fara as that is concerned. He states it passes New York State Inspection but it smokes on start up but the clears up, could it be valves?

ungh... its my car all over again. The por15 part means that its probably got rust and thats his way of hiding it. Its also got t-tops, which means that there will be even more rust under the carpets, around the pillars, itll leak when it rains, and the car will smell like a dirty gym locker. OTOT, it looks like its got that crappy water based paint necessitated by the smog ***** and that stuff flakes right off. As for the smoke, almost all old SBCs do that. Its bad valve guide seals. Not much to worry about.

If hes asking less then 1k and you need a beater then it might be ok, but otherwise id pass it up for a nice hardtop.
