Gas cap identity?

Are there two different types of gas gaps for our cars? The counter guy asked if I wanted a vented one or not. How do I know which one I have? I thought that if your car didn't make that whooshing noise when you remove the cap, that it was a sign of a bad cap? Right now, my cap doesn't make that noise.
