just today it started - when i left to go to work this a.m. i started the car up and right away there's a strange noise, almost like a howling sound, for lack of a better description... it seems to be coming from the rear part of the motor. it's not high-pitch sound... it could be a vacuum leak(?), i'm thinking, although i've never had one, so can't really swear to what that would sound like. the car seems to run fine still, doesn't seem to have any performance problem, it just is making this noise now. It's been more than a year since i've had my intake off and have not done any work in that area since then... if you have any ideas, i'm listening... thanks, guys...

That's funny...Mine did the same thing last summer. The sound I heard was more like a whisle, and it was even loud enough to hear inside the car. The sound happened when I relocated my MAT sensor to the air ducting. I plugged the hole with a pipe plug (or something I dont' remember) I think it created an orifice to whistle as the air moved in the plenum much like blowing over a bottle top does. Does yours rise in pitch with rpm? I simply screwed the plug in further and the whistle stoped. One of those funny quirks... I probably didn't help you much, but maybe it will help trigger some ideas...

Alternators tend to whine just before they go bad. How is your voltage? Just a thought...

BINGO!!! I don't know why I didn't think of that earlier, cuz that's exactly what it did last time (many years ago). I didn't even think about it, and after I got home, I got the ol' stethescope out (those things are so cool)and that was the first thing I checked. Once I found that, I looked at the ol' voltmeter and sure enough... Now if it stops raining I can change it...
