Where is my cooling fan temperature switch?

Hey, quick post here. I think i might have figured out why my car is acting so screwy. Its a really wild idea, and has to do with my fan being grounded to always be on somehow sending poor feedback to my ECU, causing a retard of timing.

I will definatly post about this later on if this crazy idea i have is the problem.

Anyway, Where can i find my cooling fan temperature switch? In my haynes manuel it says its located by the "right side cylinder head, by the starter solenoid"

I hate to sound stupid, but where exactily is that located? Do i have to jack up my car to get access to this temperature switch? Or is it easily access through the hood?

Please post if you can help me in any way, pictures are a plus! I really don't know what im doing as well as i wish i did. Just want to know what im getting into before i do it.

Its between the #6 and #8 spark plugs in the passenger side head.

You can get it from the top or bottom.

Thanks for the quick reply!

So between #6 and #8? Is it down by the headers? or is it up higher? Is it actually plugged in somewhere into the heads themselves? (or head, i guess i should say)

Thanks for narrowing it down by quite a bit for me engineboy!

Also, where do you live in CA? Im out here in orange county, between la, and san diego.

It's hard to see from the top. If you're underneath the car though look for something sticking out of the block, I think it's below the level of the spark plugs, if I remembor correctly. It has, of course, a wire running out of it. Unfortunately I don't have any pictures to offer, and it is a bit cramped in there. I tried changing my fan switch a while back but gave up because I'm lazy. Other than that though it's not a hard thing to change.. It screws out/screws back in. (Oh yeah and there's the wire too )

Oh yeah, be prepared to get a little wet with antifreeze. You can either do your work quickly, or drain the antifreeze to below the level of the switch. I've never done this myself, but I think you have to take the thermostat out first.. Then drain some from the radiator, plug it, turn the car on so the coolant cycles out of the engine block, repeat, yatta yatta. Again, I"ve never done that so that's probably a really stupid way of going about it. hehe

While I'm at it, what is an easy way to change that thingie anyways?

Its in the head. About the same level of the spark plugs.

if you have headers, you should be able to see it. exhaust manifolds, maybe not.

hey...its u christos...what up...its Lai3amba.

its on the passenger side, towards the fire wall. kinda high up....like the spark plugs....like engine boy said.

and yes...when you remove it, coolant will come out. i forgot what socket size it is...i think about 21 mm deep socket will do.

I have that problem. I recently installed headers on my 92 Camaro and accidently pulled out the wire connected on the sensor. Connected on the wire was a long pin. Ive tried to insert the pin back into the sensor but felt resistance. Do I have to remove the sensor first and insert the pin or can I just insert it, but carefully?? Yup my car does run sluggish in normal cruising speed...must be the problem.

Make sure you remove the temp. switch. Some cars (like HO 305's) have another sensor located right above the starter. This is the knock sensor. The temp switch is higher (closer to the spark plugs)up on the passenger side of the engine.
