What
kind of transmission do you have?If you have a 700r4,it sounds like it's not locking up in 4th to give you overdrive.Your car ever had fuel injection originaly? You will need a lockup kit,or check out thetech articles on converter lockup. If not then check your plugs to see if they are fouled.you might be running to rich, and that may require changing your jets on the 4bb carb.In other words you might need a tune up.

Is it basically stock? If it is you would benifit from getting rid of that quadrajunk and getting a nice spreadbore with an HEI. I junked mine and my mileage when up from 16 to 20+ on a 350. That is pretty terrible, sounds like you need an overhaul on something, maybe the carb or a tune up. What mechanical condition is the car in?

It runs great. It has 122,000 miles on it. I just had it tuned. I was thinking about getting a tbi. would that help the gas milage.

Hey a quadrajet works sweet if you know what you are doing. I had a stock 305 in my 84 Z28 and I rebuilt the carb myself and after some tuning it worked great. The car had 320,000KM on it and it got better milage than my 91 TPI. A lot of people give quadrajets a hard time but they usually are the ones that know nothing about them.

305 TPI
Flowmaster 3" exhaust
700R4 with 2000 Stall and shift kit 3.42 rearend

Car: '86 IROC, black and sharp
Engine: 305 tpi, bone stock
Transmission: 700r4
Axle/Gears: 3.42 pos w/rear db
On the 83Z (305 HO and 700R4) about 10 to 11 but it's turning so much rpm it's no wonder. On the 86 IROC (305 TPI and 700R4) about 20 to 21 in town. At 70 mph the 83Z is running near 3500 rpm while the 86 IROC is only running 2000. Yes the clutch locks up on the 83Z, or at least shortly after the thing goes into OD the rpm drops again by about 200.
