undercooling(??) problem
undercooling(??) problem
Here's the car:
1989 Iroc 305 tbi, mostly stock engine except for an open element air filter and a 180* thermostat.
Here's the story:
My car takes forever to cool down. By this I mean, if I come to a stop somewhere, the engine starts to heat up. That's nothing unusual. When I start driving again, it takes forever for the temperature to get back to normal. It took 30 minutes of highway driving for the temperature to drop thirty degrees. If the cooling fan comes on, the temperature doesn't drop at all, it just stops going up.
Now, here's the status on the cooling system:
Air dam is in place, fans do work. Radiator hoses (upper and lower) are fine, they don't collapse if I give it rev the engine. Radiator fins are nice and silver with some tarnish/miscoloring on them, but not much.. and for a 12 year old car I think that's expected. Water pump appears to be working fine.. By that I mean there's plenty of water being cycled through the radiator. The coolant was flushed recently with a 50/50 mix, and the coolant is still that sickly radioactive green color, and nice and full.
Any ideas why it cools so poorly?
Think I should run more water in the radiator?
With the days getting hotter it's something I'd like taken care of soon.

Same damn thing happens to my 91RS. Checked everything imaginable, new water pump BE COOL radiator and it still heats up quick and takes forver to cool down.
I was just over at a friends tonight and we were trying to figure out the problem. In the end we agreed that it is an air flow problem. Even when driving it will take forever to cool off even if there is little air flow because the engine is under a load creating heat. If we wait until the fans turn on and then spray some water in front of the radiator the temp went down fast! Try this to yours. The water substitutes for air flow. I am going to straighten out all the fins in the A/C condensor and buy a new air damm and hope it might solve the problem. Let me know how it goes and if you can come up with a new theory. Im willing to try everthing!
