What about hollow camshafts?

Doesnt the LS1 come with a hollow camshaft for higher revlimits? Do they make any for SBC's how much do they cost?

Never heard of any such thing.

Of all the things in an engine that you could lighten to make it rev better, the cam is probably 7/8 of the way to the bottom of the list...

The only hollow thing in the valve train should be the pushrods! Ligther metal type maybe (ie- titanium), but not hollow... It isn't going to spin any faster if it weights less.

No, but it's going to take less energy to keep it spinning.

No, it would take less energy to spin it up; it will take the same amount to keep it going.

Extremely little cheese at the end of a rather large maze.

I don't know if the hollow cam would help you that much, but yes the LS1 comes with a hollow cam for some reason if not to absorb vibrations from the crank and or bottom end which increaces valvetrain stability and increaces rev limit.

LS1s also come with a lighter pushrod that is not hollow but sodium(salt) filled, and they suck one of the easyest things to do to a LS1 is bend those ****y pushrods.

I thought all camshafts had a oil passaged in the middle.

Not mine... solid iron baby! At least I think it is iron, but I know it isn't hollow and it wieghts about 10lbs IIRC. The rotating mass isn't that much though to think I'd gain too much if I could make a holow one. Many more gaines to be had else where...

I used to sell Chevys back in 94-95. That was when the "All New Monte Carlo" was as they said, "brought back". They changed the name of the 3.1 Liter to the 3100 cc. It has a hollow cam also. They told us that it was from the manufacturing of the cam. They used two different metals in the cam. One is some steal alloy for the shaft, and the other is cast iron for the lobes. They had to force a ball throught the heated steel to get it to form properly in and through the cast iron lobes. They did all of this for less rotating mass, which yes does cause smoother, easier acceleration, and smoother idle.

In a V6 engine, they have to try to dampen the vibration that the car gets from the engine. It has 3 rod journals. Any crank with an odd number of rod journals has a tendency to vibrate the whole engine more than a even number. They tried to reduce mass to help too. Haven't you ever noticed a 4cyl. w/ 2 journals, and an V8 both idle smoother than a V6? Look at all the support braces in a V6 engine bay. They all have huge rubber grommets in them. Set your hand on a V6 when it is running. It's kinda wobbly.

I think they used that hole in the cam, in the LT1 also, for oil flow. I don't know all of the details, but that is what our Chevrolet Rep told us about hollow camshafts.

FYI.
