How common is a rusted out gas tank?
I ask this because the damn thing started leaking while I was in florida last week, so I had to have the thing towed and the tank replaced for $400 while I was down there.
I live in CT, but the car barely saw any winter drive time except during the last two. The guy at the garage told me that it was rusted by the strap and that he's seen it before, but I've never really heard of this happening. Is this very common? Would anyone guess if this seems early or late to them?

Oh yeah, it happens. My '79 T/A did the same thing about 10 years ago. Fortunately I only lost about 1/4 tank (and no fires). I found a shop that does tank repair and they welded it up. You MUST follow special procedures to weld a gas tank if you want to live to tell about it. Some shops won't do it at all.
I was at a car show today where a '65 Chevy started leaking gas from its tank big time. Enough leaked out (and very quickly) that sheriff's deputies were dispatched to enforce a no smoking order in the immediate vicinity. There were some very nervous people parked around that car...
