Temp Gauge Neddle Is Off The Gauge!!

Hello,
When I bought the car my temp gauge needle was past whatever could possibly be!! I was wondering what could be wrong with it? And what kind of screwdriver do I use to get the glass open? I have the old style tach setup with speedo going up to a wooping 85 MPH ( I can't tell ya how many times I have buried that thing!! )
Any and all help is needed do to the fact that summers coming. I would like to know when my car is going to overheat rather then seeing white steam come out of the hood.
Erik

Make sure that the sender wire is actually connected to the sender. If I remember correctly, the oil pressure and coolant temperature gauges will max out if the wire is disconnected, or will read zero if the wire is grounded.

that is correct... your wire probably melted to the manifold or something.. check btw the 1 and 3 cyl's on the passenger side near the manifold
