Just installed fuel pump!!!!!
Well after attempting to adjust my idle speed, my car stalled out and died. It shot me a code 33, so I uhooked the battery over night to clear it. The next morning I go out to start it up and I don't hear the pump priming. Well, the relay looked fine, so I was like what the hell, why not replace the pump....And I DID!! I know this really has no point whatsoever, but it's just the biggest feeling of satisfaction when you do something the RIGHT way! It took me all of 4 hours to complete, and I had to unhook the whole rear suspension and drop it, take off the tires (so I could cut off the rusted endlinks so the rear would drop lower), then I pulled out the half full gas tank by myself (I had no way of siphoning out the fuel) and installed the new pump. This was all done alone, with no help. Hooked everything back up, and BAM, she fires right up!!!! It honestly wasn't that hard and I would definitely suggest to you lazy people to not cut the body up just to have access to the pump. Do, however, have a pen and paper, because you are bound to make up a few more curse words like I did!
Man, I am so freaken excited about this simple little install! I just saved myself $300 in labor!!!! Go ME!! Ok, I"m done now, gotta go drive it around, hehe

LOL! Actually, it's more of a combination of ones already used. But still, throwing wrenches and swearing DEFINITELY goes along with dropping the gas tank.

This thread should be a sticky in the fabrication board. That way everytime someone talks about hacking the crap out of thier car they can be referred to it. Some people just dont get the sense of satisfaction from a job well done.
Almost forgot, good job man, and keep up the good work!

My car is in pretty bad condition (mainly ugly) and I still couldn't bring myself to hack it up just to get to the fuel pump. Even if one were to cut a hole, I don't see how you can get the pump out. It would be a real pain to cut the lines on top of the tank and that is the last place you would want to make a spark! How do people cut the lines, with a hack saw? How would you spin a pipe cutter around it? The only thing I can think of, is that you would have to cut a really large hole.

Long story short, we ended up taking an air chisel to the back part to cut it off, no sparks. However, I would NEVER do it to MY own car, regardless of how many times I had to take out the tank. Here's a tidbit of info, I am only 17 years old, have ZERO mechanical training (everything I know is self taught, trial and error, and LOTS of reading), and I still accomplished it alone without breaking any parts and in a relatively short amount of time considering what had to be done. So, if I can do it, any monkey that can turn a wrench can do it, and cutting up the car should be a last resort, like if the tank was rusted so bad it fused to the body. It's amazing the sense of accomplishment this brought, even moreso than putting in my headers and doing my own exhuast. Thanks for the props guys!

OMFG!!!!!! LOL, that guy needs to be told that duct tape CANNOT be used to fix everything. You have got to be kidding me
Wow, some people, I swear. He must like the smell of gas or something, having all those fumes coming up into the car
Why cut up a perfectly good car?!?!?!?!?!?

Why cut up a perfectly good car?!?!?!?!?!? but hey some guys insist that hacking up a car isnt going to hurt anything thou right....LMAO
i know this is an extreem example of it but still its out there and the ones that are doing this to their cars arent all doing it correctly ....ive stopped to look at a couple thirdgens in the last 6months to purchase and 2 of them were cut up like this or worse...so i dont see a good thing in guys saying its a worthwhile mod at all..
The funny thing is, everyone that posts on here saying they are gonna do it the right way, and not hack it up never post pictures of thier work. They kick and scream and insist its the right way to do it, and thier work will be as good as a factory job, but oddly enough you never see pictures of the end result. If some of the guys here did post pictures when they were done, and they looked good, I would tell them that, but I just havent seen many good attempts at this.

Just want to give a "NICE JOB!" to 305RSlc for just tackling the job and coming out on top.
I too have been self taught for the most part with plenty of trial and slightly more error...
Enjoy the feeling of accomplishment... You've most certainly earned it!

the best way to learn how to do something is to just do and learn from you mistakes.that makes the feeling of satisfaction that much greater when your done and your happy with how it came out.

Yeah, it was cool today. I took it to a shop to have my power window motors replaced....didn't feel like doing that one myself, and of course I have NO time to clean my car, so I have oil and hand prints all near the gas tank filler. The guys at the shop were like, "WTF did you do there, why's it so dirty??" and I told them I had changed it out, and they gave me huge props for doing it myself. Kinda cool to get respect from seasoned mechanics by doing something yourself.

great job man. im gonna have to tackle this soon because of the new engine.
i did have a couple questions though...
First - what did you do to the exhaust to get it out of your way???
Second - all i have is the pump...no harness or anything like that. just the metal cylindrical pump....do i need anything else?? (the reason i ask is because Racetronix that sells aftermarket pumps for the tpi cars sells a aftermarket fuel pump harness too...heres a link)

Just unbolt the exhaust from the back of the catalytic convertor. With the axle lowered down to the ground (don't stress your rear brake hose!!), the whole exhaust will just pull out from underneath the car. On the rear brake line, right before the hose, is a clip that holds the line to the body with a 10mm screw- undo the screw, that way you won't wind up hanging a 200 pound axle from a poor rubber brake hose.
And by the way, that's the easiest way to install a cat-back with a one-piece intermediate pipe!
Thumbs up to ya, 305RSlc, for dropping the tank down the right way. I've replaced my pump twice by dropping the tank down, and when it's time for a third pump, I'll still drop the tank down. People make it seem like it's Oh So Hard To Drop The Tank, it's really not! Yeah it takes a while, but none of it is complicated; unbolt this, remove that, take this out, change the pump, then put it all back together!

CamaroRUS, you shouldn't need a harness for the pump install. THe old pump should come right out and the new one should install the reverse of removing the old pump and just plug into the existing wiring harness. WHen I bought mine new, the pump came with new wires and whatnot, but I didn't feel like soldering new wires to the sending unit assembly, nor making sure everything worked properly so I just plugged it into the existing wiring. The only thing you MIGHT have to worry about, is I have heard that the grounds on these pumps habitually go bad causing pump failure. However, I have not had any problems with mine, and I have dropped the tank twice since I have had the car so I wouldn't worry about it. Have fun, and if you have any more questions, dont' hesitate to ask.
LOL!!! I thought that pic was of my car for a second!!!
Dont wory, I didnt do it, the car came that way. I am currently in the process of repairing the lines so they are not connected with only rubber fuel hose. The duct-tape in that picture is dead on correct where the fuel pump is. The other cuts in the pic that are not taped over must have been from experimenting. Mine is not that bad of a job for doing it the wrong way. I am just P-Oed that I have to replace part of the cut up fuel line.
I will try to take Pics and post them so people can see what I did to fix up the mess someone else made.
I came up with many classic cuss word combos but have decided not to share them even by using the * key to edit. This should be a family friendly site.
I guess my vocabulary gets scrambled up when I am extremly frustrated.
