Help, car shutters when trying to accellerate

87 Firebird 2.8L automatic

Car was at shop for a week, got it back today, Mechanic goes, well it runs, but He cant find a definite timing for it. He had replaced the pick up coil, ingition module, cap/rotor. Well he was having trouble becuase the injecters where not pulsing but had fuel pressure to them. To find out after his 2 days of trouble shooting he had come how killed the ingition module that he had just installed.

Well anyways get the car back tonight and he tells me that he does not know what is wrong with it now, possibly malfunctioning MAF, and EGR. He is hopeing that it was becuase he had the battery dead for 2 days (dont seem to want to hold a very good charge now) that possibly the ECM had cleared its self to a point that it has to completely relearn the cars functioning ability.

Now to get to the point, car used to run very strong untill the ingition thing fouled up, now i cant get it back to that state with all, well what we belive to be all good functioning components.

When i have the car in park, trying to blip the trottle will get me a horrible shutter, and makes the Surp belt skip. If i slowly and i mean slowly rev it up i can make a full sweep with almost no stumbleing. If its in drive, i can for get about getting it over 1200 RPMs or itll stumble and die right there. If i can get lucky enough and go on a flat or sloped downward grade i can get the car to SLOWLY acc up to around 2500 RPMs but a blip or small incrase at that rpm will kill the motor. We have both been fidleing with the timing, he is certin that he has the rotor in the proper place, i checked fireing order and its good, car will start and idle pretty much fine, just that there are ALOT of fumes.

I blocked off EGR temperaly let car run for 30min, tried to do the rev and diving test, samething still there.

BTW MAF, Air temp, IAC, TPS are all new. Car was run with out MAF for a few weeks before this all happend, becuase for some reason i had more power, better fuel economy than i had ever had in this car (ive had it for 2 years)

Well any sugestions are appreciated.

Future plans with the car are
Fix some rust
Finnish 350/700R4 and drop in

I need the car to run well enough that i can get on a highway for the next 4-5 months till imrdy to swap in the V-8 with a carb and HEI (cant get too much maintinace free can it?)

sounds like a fuel related problem to me lol. When you tried to set the timing, did you unhook the wire coming off the dizzy (ESC I think?)? If you didnt then the timing will jump around and it will be impossible to set the timing correctly.

If I were you I'd:

1) Fire your mechanic -- sounds like a klutz

2) set the timing yourself

3) get a fuel pressure gauge and check the pressure all around, before the filter, after the filter, at the rails. (if setting the timing didnt fix it)

Well he does have me tring to turn the Distributer to set the timing with out unpluging anything, and he doesnt even know exactly where the timing is, but he is sure he is "close" becuase it starts. Ill have to go back down there and probly have him show me that he is checking the fuel pressure properly, i belive he never checked the fuel pressure while the car was actually running, just that when the key was in the on position it had the proper amount of fuel pressure at the rails.

Definitely a fuel problem.

Sounds like half of your injectors aren't working.

IIRC the 6-cyl FI cars have 2 "ECM" fuses, just like the V8 cars do; they actually supply power to the injectors, not the ECM, one for the left bank of cyls and one for the right bank. One of those is blown.

Leave the timing alone until you find the actual problem, which is not the timing (although it might now be somewhere in the outer ozone layer after being dinked with unnecessarily). "Stuttering" is when some cyls are working and some are not. Timing, on the other hand, affects all cyls equally. It CANNOT cause the symptom at hand.

Checked and replaced both fuses, both were good from the look of it, checked continuity on them, they were fine, im heading out to get a fuel pressure gauge and check to see if i have pressure while running. Its possible to have good pressure but on enough flow due to a cloged fuel filter right?
