alright, went home last night changed out the oxygen sensor, and i am still having the same problem, only this time there is no code to go along with it. when i go up a hill it seems like the engine is running w.o.t., but i am not moving anywhere fast. it will run like this and i will only be doing 3000 rpm. any clue what this might be? i have changed the oxygen censor, and i have also changed the fuel filter. someone told me that it could even possibly be just a bad tank of gas. well any help would be greatly appreciated.
What do you mean by "it seems like the engine is running at wide open throttle." Is the thing screaming at you loudly or do you have the pedal to the floor and the car isn't moving like it should? Lets start with the basics. Follow this procedure to check to see if the car is going into closed loop operation.
Start the engine. Now insert the paper clip from yesterday into the same two terminals you used to pull the code. The SES light should start flashing rapidly. Drive the car around the neighborhood for a few minutes and see if the frequency of the pulses of the SES light slow down. When the SES light pulses at 2.5 times per second it is in open loop (not getting signals from the o2 sensor) When it flashes 1 time per second it is in closed loop (taking signals from o2 sensor). We'll go from there I really didn't understand the description very well but you may have a drivetrain problem. Let us know.

bsa, what i meant, is that the engine is screaming at me, and i am only taching at 3000, and i maybe have the pedal mid way. when i do the check you just mentioned, what should i be looking for?
Sorry it took so long to return the post. You are basically checking to see whether or not the car goes into closed loop operation, or in other words is taking readings from the o2 sensor to make fuel calculations. I always start from this point since it kinda lets you know what you are dealing with.

i checked and it is taking readings from the o2 sensor. so what do you think that i should do next. by the way the problem is occuring even before you it gets into open loop
no, since this started happening, the exhaust has gotten quiter, a lot quiter.the only new noise i have noticed, and it is pretty noticable, is something that sounds like a coffee can with rocks in it when i start it up, and when i down shift, but that might be my cat. i can not get my car to go any higher than 3000 rpm up a hill. i took it on the highway yesterday, and i had it in 3rd gear doing 50 m.p.h. going up a hill with the pedal buried to the floor, and i was still slowing down. black beauty, do you have any ideas what it might be?

Check your timing.
Too much advance in your timing can cause that coffee can with rocks in it sound. Of course, it usually only happens when you're idling (not in neutral) and when your car is under load, like going up a hill in fourth gear.
It can also make the engine not want to rev quite as high as it should.
Also, when was the last time you replaced your fuel filter? Perhaps some dirt got broken loose from the tank and is partially blocking the filter. That would definately make a car not want to rev as high.

i changed it along with oxygen sensor about two weeks ago. does anyone think that it could be a collapsed cat. i have a friend that had that happen to him. does anyone know of a way to test for that?

I was just thinking the same thing (that the cat is clogged). At least it matches the symptoms you are describing. If you get up under the car and bang the **** out of the cat and it rattles then the thing is toasted and is causing a major restriction. One of my friends had a fried cat and his car wouldn't pull above 2000 rpm and generally ran like ****. Check the cat.

yea, i think that it is already toast, the main reason is that when you hit a bump you can here the thing rattling. i will post again when i give it a try, thanks for your continued help
