Broken flexplate??????

Is it uncommon for a 92' Z28 w/350 to have a broken flexplate? At least that is what I think the problem is. My friend says it might be a blown motor but it idles smooth and the noise seems to be coming from the rear of the motor. Also the noise is eratic in its timing(not a constant knocking sound). It will knock a few times then quite then come back. Any pointers will be helpful.

nothing else sounds like a cracked flex plate. makes a sort of growling sound. sounds like the thing could explode. i took a cracked flex plate off a 355 last winter, but it never made any noise, but wasn't that bad a crack either.

Believe me, an engine with a spun bearing doesn't like to run !

I've broke many flexplates, and they can easily be mistaken for a rod bearing, for the exceptions that the engine it self has good power, and good oil pressure.

Like 'ede' I've had little hair line cracks all the way to full blown separation of the center of the flexplate (slippage big time !!!)

Most causes of cracked plates are due to the bolt(s) either coming lose, or completely out.

An after market plate can handle much more stress, but can still break easily if you lose a bolt. So get a good set of ARP flex bolts, and some thread lock.

Good Luck,

Ron

Appreciate the info. I was just refusing to believe that it was the motor since it was eratic and since it idled smoother than my other L98 camaro.
Thanks, will keep you updated
