Oil Pump? HV & HP or just HV

I am building a mildly SCed 350 for my 84 Camaro. 8 to 1 compression with a street blower which should be emmissions legal. I can get a high volume and high pressure oil pump or just high volume or stock. I was thinking high volume but not high pressure would be good. When do you need high pressure and/or high volume?

Thanks,

Glen

i put one in my '87 IROC when i did the motor...

way too much pressure imo, i believe it was the P55-HV or something... it was by Clevite, what a piece of crap.. i ended up pulling my oil pan off and putting in a stock Melling..

I like mine regular. Search the old threads and archives, you will find this issue hashed about about a lot.

I searched the archives and got a lot of info. It seems most people prefer a stock pump. I have a high volume pump but I think I will be OK since I have a 6 quart oil pan and a high volume pickup to match.

there are two HV designs. The original HV was just a bigblock (five bolts on the cover) pump. If your not carefull, you will run a stock pan dry with this pump. You need to ensure oil drain back and that the pan has sufficent volume. The latest ones are still 4 bolt covers but they have enlarged pickup tubes. These don't take the extra hp like the bigblocks pumps but you still have some of the same issues. I would not use an HV without an aftermarket oil pan.

For blower motors, I run the "hv" big block pumps, a bigger pan and Mobil-1 10-30 or 10-40, depending on the setup. Conventional oil with these pumps usually allows too much oil pressure at cold startup...

i like the melling m55 with a mr gasket #26 spring. i weld a brace on the pick up and bolt it to the pump body. i've done a lot of SBC and a few v6s this way and never had an oil pump related problem. rpm's never went above 7000 on any engine far as i know.
