Car WONT turn off

Today after a long drive i pulled up to the parking lot and turn the key off and the car was still going.The electricity inside was off but the motor itself was still running.MY bro helped me turn it off but i wanna know what maybe causing this.We are going to take apart the steering columb to see if a rod broke.Any other possible causes?

What kind of engine do you have? Fuel injection or carb? I had a similar problem with my old '84 Z28, Quadrajet. When I would run low octane fuel(87), the car would diesel after I would shut off the engine. Try running premium and see if the problem goes away. With gas prices like they are today, many people are using the low octane stuff.

Car: 85 Z28
Engine: 305 TPI (dead) -> building 355
Transmission: 27 spline 700R4 (another one died) -> T5 goin in next
you can try this. I have a TPI car, I don't know if this will work on all cars because I don't know if they all have the connector.

Anyways, I pulled out an electrical connector on the firewall on the driverside. It had five or six wires in it; the closest one to the fender. when that was unplugged, the engine would not stop running, even if I had the key in my hand. As soon as I plugged it in, with the key out, the engine stopped. So check the connections on that plug.

Later,
Jesse

Deiseling <sp?> is a pretty distinct noise... The car sputters for a while, sounding like it's about to cut off.. It also sounds like it's knocking really bad. If it sounds like that, then either bring your timing down some, or get better gas. That usually helps.

If it runs just fine, it probably was something gone awry in the column.

Also a good idea to make sure you're not running real hot. That would also cause dieseling.

I have a 305 lo3 tbi.Well I took it to a mechanic and he couldnt find anything wrong except that plug that oldbluez is talking about.It was completly burned and it was a wonder how the car was still running with it like that.IT wasnt a knocking sound and when the steering wheel wasa taken apart it wasnt messed up.The only other thing i can possibly imagine is that it was like 90 degrees and i drove father than usaul.
