1st gen Camaro owner with some questions....
Hi guys, i just started coming here, and it is an awsome site. I have 2 68 Camaros,(see sig) and was looking to get a third one. Here's what i've found:
1992 RS with 71K, T tops, power everything, 16" rims, super nice condition, for 6000. Is this a good deal? It is owned by the orginal owner, a 35 year old girl who took VERY good care of it.
What should i be looking for? Do the 305's have any major problems? What about the tranny, or T-tops? Help me out here please.

hey man, welcome to thirdgen.org
my family also has 2 1968 Camaros.. I have a '68 straight 6 250cid 3-speed Saginaw and my Dad has a '68 RS/SS 396 4-speed Muncie car..
as for the car, that's an OK deal but if I were you I'd try to get a car with TPI.. as well, t-tops are nice but they add alot of body flex to the car so you get alot of creaking as things flex... I personally don't mind it as the t-tops more than make up for it
if you are interested in getting a car with t-tops I would look into SFCs (subframe connectors) and definitely getting a wonderbar and strut tower brace (i have a wonderbar and IROC swaybar if you'd like to get one)
other than that, buy away
The '91-'92 cars are nice, I like the ground effects.. I also have 2 IROC-Zs and wouldn't trade them for the world..
to each his own..
TBI is a good induction system, don't let people tell you otherwise.. there are alot of guys that run fast times with TBI.. it's a good cross between carb and TPI.. TPI is alot more fun to drive, remember that you drive torque and buy horsepower... TPI will give you big block torque, no doubt..
hope I answered a few questions for you, if you want to chat more email me

Sounds just like my car.
List of problems since I bought my car.
Bad TPS
Bad alternator.
That's it. Got a best of 32 MPG, average 27.
Here's the thing, the RS's are slow stock, and the suspension leaves much to be desired, but compared to a 68 it'll feel like a Porche
You have the 305 TBI motor, check out the TBI board for info.
Other than that stuff, if the car is optioned well, it's a good deal. And a really good car.

That's cool. I'm going to drive it in the morning, and i'm going to try and talk her down to 5k.
That's funny you'd mention handling like a Porsche, since i'm a Jaguar/Porsche technician at the dealer here in Vegas.
The 50-50 is going to have a full frame, ran through the rockers, and the C5 transaxle and suspension will used for the rear. That way it will get 50/50 weight distribution. I'll update the site as it progresses.

Oh man! It is SO much better than i thought! She is a 54 year old woman, who drove it, babied it, and serviced it all its life. She has every record, and gas fill up! Super clean car. It will be mine!

TJ,
Better buy it soon! Looks like you're going to need another project in the next several months.
The 305s are a pretty reliable assembly, and the relatively simple TBI is a good compromise between power/economy/reliability. Don't expect a lot from the valve train - very uninspiring valve sizes, springs, and cam profiles. On the positive side, they can run 300,000 miles easily if maintained well.
The intake and heads are the typical GM JEGR design (Just Enough to Get Running). There is a lot of power left on the table, and most of it is in the heads and cam - not a big revelation if you've been around Chevy engines for a while. I'm thinking a dual TBI setup would get some decent flow through the system if you wanted to play with it a bit.
The platform is fairly stable but can be a little weak between the subs and tubs. It looks like you've recognized that kind of problem already so it won't be a complete surprise to you. If you are going to push the car at all you need to stiffen up the unibody front-to-back and front suspension side-to-side. The whole ThirdGen series is susceptible to idler arm wear due to the stresses placed on it, so expect that. The spring towers need better bracing at the top for hard cornering, but are adequate for routine driving. Take a close look at the steering box mounting area for stress cracks, too.
If you have the TH700-R4 auto trans, it's fairly reliable. It's basically the old TH350 with OD and some pump/valving/case enhancements. Add acooler and keep clean oil in it and you'll be able to drive it until you're tired of it.
The Lexan T-Tops tend get distressed and fissure from UV exposure, but glass replacements can be found and will fit - the only variable would be the latching mechanism changes over the years, but they can be changed. If you have glass tops, just keep the seals cleaned and alive with silicone treatment and you should not have problems.
Rear axles are nothing to brag about either, since the respectable Borg axle was dropped in '88. Another challenge in the design is the exhaust routing - it's a little more difficult to route full duals down the same side of the car, and header space is at a premium. Large oil pans are also challenged by the front crossmember, and the radiators are pretty cramped so expect more engineering if you intend to increase cooling.
If you are only getting it as a daily driver, you should be doing very well by just maintaining and driving it normally. If you have ideas of manipulating a 535-inch BBC between the fenders and planetary transmission in the tunnel, you'd better get in touch with your frame fabrication friend again.
Oh...and remind me to "respect" the FirstGens in Vegas...

Vader- Thanks for all the great info. I'm telling myself that it will be un moddified, and daily driven, but after seeing a GM high tech issue with the Ram Jet and ZF 6 speed, i may get the urge to tear into it. I'd rather not, and just maintain it, and enjoy it.

IROC KID- If you want a 1st gen, i've got a 68 shell for sale, excellent condition, and COMPLETLY rust free. I was going to do a wicked project out of it, but changed my mind/bank account withdraws.
I am buying this 92 tomorrow morning, and i can't wait!! I'm going to be a 3rd gen owner! This will be the newest car i've ever owned!
