Sounds like the same problem im having but mine isnt so severe.
For one your steering gear could be trashed. All the goodies that are inside might be toast and that would cause you extra play in the steering wheel.
Have you been in any accidents lately? You may have bent your tie rods or spindles, this probably isnt it though.
There could be play in your steering wheel as well. These often need rebuilding to fix that problem.
Some times its as simple as tightening bolts that are involved with steering.
The problem im having and I havent found a cure is the steering coupling is toast. This is the piece that connects the steering gear to the steering wheel. Sometimes called an intermediate shaft. It has a rubber type insert that absorbs vibrations and as a result wears bad. I havent found a fix for it yet since i cant find a dealer of that part. And the dealership wants 200 something for it.

You can be your own best helper. Try using the SEARCH feature. There are lots of threads regarding excessive play in the steering, and listing almost all the possible problems.

When you start looking into it, take a close look at the steering gearbox mounting. When pushed hard through corners, these cars have a tendency to start tearing the metal to which the steering gearbox is mounted. There is an easy, permanent repair for that situation.

bad@ss89camaro, with that much play the first thing to check is the steering coupling that FirehawkSS is talking about

if yours is bad, this is for both you & FirehawkSS, look in the HELP parts at the auto parts, HELP sells a kit to replace the rubber insert.

take the vehicle to reputable front end shop.........have them properly diagnose your problemz .........my Z was wandering all over the place and it took a front end rebuild to repair.........but it was way worth it...
