dual cooling fans?

just got a 87 Iroc and it has dual cooling fans. Only one of them works,(pas. side). I was wondering when the both of them should be on? I tried turning on the a/c, didn't work. When do both of your fans turn on? TIA.

Almost could be a number of things. First off, one fan is supposed to come on via computer control, basically controlled by a fan switch in the passenger side head. It normally comes on when the temp reaches about 239*. The other fan is supposed to come on when the A/C is turned on. It is activated by a pressure switch in the A/C line... There are relays in this system, too, so it could also be caused by them.

yeah, it doesn't come on when the a/c does, is there any way I could just splice the switch wires together so they both come on when the temp is up? are there any negative effects to that mod? I never use the a/c, even though it works. Thanks Kam!

Sorry I hadn't gotten back to you sooner... You need to find out first if that other fan is functional or not, but as far as wiring them together, someone else would have to help you on that one. It can easily be done, I just choose not to since my fans are working as advertised. Let's back up a little bit first... For your primary fan, if it's working, I would replace the stock switch with a lower temp switch from Jegs or Summit, like the 200/185. (on at 200, off at 185). That in itself will keep you much cooler. The secondary fan works with the A/C, as we said before. When you turn on the A/C in your car and you say the fan doesn't come on, first disconnect the switch (it's on the drier) and jump those 2 wires with a paper clip and try it again. It should work. If it doesn't, then you have other problems. The fact that the fan doesn't work with the A/C is probably cuz that switch is bad or you are low on freon...
