Usually what I do is take the drivers side valve cover off. I rotate the crank around to 0, watch the valves. As they go up and down as you rotate the crank, you will see when you are 180* off and when you are at TDC.

what i do when i'm by myself is line up the groove on the balancer with 0 on the timing indicator put the distributor in strait with the rotor pointed to number one hook up the wires fire it up if you get a shotgun blast your firing on number 8 maanually line up the marks again take the cap off see where its pointing if it is on number one pull the distributor out turn the engine over again and line up the marks to 0 now your set on number 1 if you take the cap off and its pointing to number 8(depending how many times it cranked over)take out the distributor and align the rotor with number 1 and fire it up either way it wont hurt and you dont have to take off the pita valve covers
