Dark smoke (soot) is generally due to an excessively rich mixture. Since you failed to mention what model/year/engine/fuel system you have in the test lane, I can't begin to tell you where to start looking for answers.

hey put in a 02 sensor, and then unplug your battery for about 30 minutes then replug it and then drive it around for about 20-25 mins slowly cruising, and then check that will change your mixture count in the comp. and then if that doesnt work, try cleaing some of your stuff

I have a 86 IROC-Z 305 TPI. I get blue smoke sometimes when I first start it. What could that be?

I'm not sure, but I don't think the IROC/Z was available with a TBI system. You might have a TPI, but in either case you should check the air filter, fuel pressure, oxygen sensor (should be replaced every 30,000 miles), PCV system, TPS setting, base timing setting, and AIR system operation.

One of those should get you closer to a solution.
