brake light... grounding... HELP! non 3rdgen, but...
Hey guys...
On my new car (93 Grand Prix SE with the B4U ground effects), that I just got I have a problem. The fuse for the brakelights/chime module blows every single time I touch the brake pedal. Therefore the brake lights never come on when I hit the brakes. The parking lights in back light up when the headlights are on and such, but the brake lights seem to make the fuse blow. The only thing I can think of is that it is the grounding that is causing the problem.
Now... I am not usually one to halfass something, but I have an idea...
What if I cut the ground wire that goes to all of the tail lights, and made a new ground in the trunk somewhere? There are a lot of nice looking bolts, or places that look like they'd be good to ground to, so what would happen if I cut the ground and grounded all of the taillamps to them?
Think it might work? Vader? Any ideas guys?
Please reply to this asap... I'm trying to get this thing going right before the sun comes up.
Thanks in advance,
Zach

Check the wires at the brake light switch on the pedal, these have a tendancy to get cought between the pedal and the pedal stop causing them to ground out.
Just an idea....

I second what engineboy said. You might also want to check for spliced wires around your fuse box. Running a new ground wire won't fix a short (cause it's already grounded) - if you ran a new wire it would be the power one. Somewhere you have a hot wire/connection shorting out to a ground.

FIXED IT!
Just on a hunch, I unhooked my '3rd' brake light that is located underneath my spoiler. I put in a new fuse, and hit the brakes... IT WORKED! So there has to be a short somewhere in that... I'll find it later...
Thanks for the replies.
