big puff of smoke and now car wont start
my car was having choke problems, so i had the air cleaner assembly off for a while. I ran with it off for a few days. today, i put it back on then started up the car. i looked at the voltage meter and it said something like 18. it was in the red zone. so i was worried so i shut off the car. a got lots of smoke from the under the hood, and the carbaratuer was really smoking. i tried to start it again and i got nothing, no click, no voltage, nothing. couldn't even pop the trunk. did my battery die on me? or did something else blow up. my car is at a meter now, and i really need this problem fixed soon. someone help me.

Sound like your regulator in the alternator quit. You'll need a new alternator and possibly melted some wiring too.
