Yes it does rather suck that they do that. But they're not the only ones.

Use Comp 987 or Crower 68390X3, installed at 1.800".

I replied via email, so you can take a look for that.

Yup, thje 987 springs are a 1.43" OD so they will fit. Since you are running alum heads, spring cups or locators of sort might be something to consider.

I would just match the retainers to the springs. Comp sells 10° retainers that are a perfect fit for their 98x series of springs. You would be able to reuse the locks then.

How many people have had problems with the valve springs on AFR Heads?

I frequent a lot of boards and this is the only one that I've been to where I've heard this problem.

I don't know about the standard springs but with my AFR's I have the spring upgrade for .600 lift. Also, I've had no problems with mine. They are over a year old.
